If ordinary technologies are extensions of the
human body in the quest to create new service
environments, Sputnik (October 4, 1957) and its
successors may represent something quite
different, namely an extension of the planet itself,
creating a new ground for man in the sky and
calling despotically for a new equilibrium and
harmony of action and knowledge. The satellites
have as it were transformed the planet itself into a
work of art, inspiring a new need for programmes
and controls transcending all regional interests.
